Keneisha-Gaye Spencer, Operation Technician, Jamaica Energy Partners Group
What do you think is the biggest barrier to achieving true equality, and what steps can, or have you personally taken, to empower more women to claim their rights?
OUT of the many barriers to gender equality, I believe systematic discrimination is the most major. These policies and practices are rooted deep within many organisations, and they have even invaded our social practices and culture.
To empower women, I have volunteered my time and skills with multiple organisations aiming to develop the women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) movement. As women in the industry, we have to be each other’s cheerleaders, uplift, and celebrate one another. Let us inspire young girls to take up space in the world; be a mentor, share your experiences and knowledge with future generations. Advocate for better resources and opportunities for women. We can create a safe space for our sisters and be a voice for those struggling against domestic violence. As a nation, we can all personally share in empowering women by supporting initiatives that promote gender equality; this is a human right.
Meet Keneisha-Gaye
I am Keneisha-Gaye Spencer, an Operation Technician at Jamaica Private Power Company (which falls under the Jamaica Energy Group), where I operate and maintain two 30 MW diesel engines, a 4 MW steam turbine, and its auxiliary systems. My interest in the field was influenced by my father and uncles, who are electricians. I have always enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment when working with my hands, from helping my dad hold the aluminium level during initial construction, to skipping lunch to practice my technical drawing skills. After seeking advice, I pursued my degree in Industrial Engineering Systems at Caribbean Maritime University. After transitioning from Operations Trainee to Technician, I have developed profound gratitude for the combined logistics and operations needed in Power Generation and, most importantly, life skills that will further fuel my passion.
