A Blooming Paradise:
SO Gardening got access to Factories Corporation of Jamaica Chairman Lyttleton “Tanny” Shirley’s orchid oasis nestled in Jack’s Hill, St Andrew. Shirley has amassed a vast collection of vandas, mokaras, ascocendas, and dendrobiums in a cacaphony of hues, creating a sanctuary of which he’s immensely proud. The shrewd approach that Shirley has used over his four decade career in the public and private sector, is the blueprint for maintaining his beloved orchids.
“I really love all types. Some require more attention and care depending on their locations. Orchids are like your children. They need daily attention with the right approach,” Shirley suggests.
His passion for orchids is evident! The vibrant colours are a product of his relentless care and attention. It’s a passion that he lovingly shares with his daughter Nella, who he invites to help in the orchid’s maintenance. In advising orchid lovers on how to create their own havens, Shirley encourages a consistent fertilising routine, while preaching patience and persistence to nurture orchids to their full potential. It is a similar method to how he approaches fatherhood.
“Once you get into the routine as to what they require in terms of treatment, it becomes no different than how you take care of your kids with joy, love, and expectations,” Shirley concludes.
