Jamaica’s first model school scores success
KINGSTON, Jamaica — My Model University (MU), a new institution founded in 2024, has set the tone for an exciting future with rapid growth, becoming a local and international player in the modelling industry.
At the heart of My Model University’s success is its Chief Executive Officer and founder, Alisha Thorpe.
She aims to provide comprehensive training and exposure to young creatives in Jamaica, ensuring they can thrive on the global stage.
A passionate advocate for youth empowerment, her deep understanding of the modelling industry and her commitment to excellence have been the driving forces behind MU’s inception and swift rise.
“I was born in front of a camera, the child of a photographer, which sparked my lifelong connection to the art of posing. From an early age, I realised I loved not only being in front of the lens but also teaching others. I was always placed in leadership roles, naturally guiding those around me. As I grew, my community began reaching out, both online and in person, asking for guidance on how to start their modelling journeys,” said Thorpe.
Initially, Thorpe was considering tutorials as a means of answering requests from her online community. However, deep down she knew the solution was something bigger than just a few tutorials. This then prompted her to create something that would have a lasting impact.
“What I envisioned was something more — a community of models in Jamaica that was not just about learning but about support, inclusion and a shared passion for the craft. I knew I couldn’t do it alone, but I was ready to build a movement,” she said.
In just under a year since its launch, My Model University has achieved remarkable success. This has included over 15,000 followers across platforms, five models signed to agencies after their first training with the institution, partnerships with major brands, like Stay, Golden Cosmetics, the main partner StarApple.AI, and the Coconut Industry Board, as well as international opportunities for models who represented Jamaica in Guyana.
