Digicel tells customers to upgrade ‘bangers’ ahead of Friday’s 2G network shutdown
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Digicel is urging customers still using older 2G devices to upgrade immediately as it will shut down its 2G network completely on Friday.
The company says it is decommissioning its 2G network on February 28 to focus on more advanced technologies, including 3G, 4G, 4G LTE, and LTE-A “as part of its commitment to delivering a superior digital experience”.
“This move will enable customers to benefit from improved call quality, faster browsing, smoother connectivity and enhanced video streaming,” Digicel said in a statement.
In addition to upgrading their 2G devices, the company says customers should ensure their SIM cards are 4G LTE-compatible and that their devices support 3G or 4G technology.
Most 2G devices are older model push-button phones, commonly referred to as “bangers” or early-generation smartphones. Customers can visit a Digicel store or the company’s website to check if their SIMs and devices require an upgrade.
