Remembering Sir Alexander
Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Chairman Robert Montague places a floral tribute on the monument of National Hero Sir Alexander Bustamante, then kisses the tomb of Lady Bustamante during Monday’s floral tribute marking the 141st anniversary of the JLP founder’s birth. Sir Alexander, who became the first prime minister of independent Jamaica in 1962, retired from active politics in 1967. He died on August 6, 1977 at the age of 93. On October 18, 1969 he was conferred with the Order of National Hero along with his cousin Norman Washington Manley.
