Big Pop finally sheds maiden tag
BIG Pop, a four-year-old chestnut colt by Bold Conquest – Girl Talk), was able to shed his maiden tag at the races on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
Trained by Jason DaCosta and ridden by Robert Halledeen, Big Pop dominated the $730,000 Ham Stables Limited (Champion Breeder – 2024) Trophy, winning by an impressive 2¾ lengths.
In the Restricted Maiden Condition Race for native-bred four-year-olds and upward, Big Pop made all the running in a four-furlong (800m) event. He clocked 50.0 seconds, with splits of 24.3 and 36.3.
Big Pop exploded out of the gates, seizing the lead as Yorkist (Christopher Mamdeen), Lucky Papa (Richard Henry), Ranny (Daniel Thompson), and Spragga (Oneil Mullings) gave chase.
As the runners approached the final quarter the battle for supremacy intensified. Big Pop and Lucky Papa engaged in a brief duel but in the final furlong Big Pop’s superior strength and endurance told, and he drew clear for an easy win. Spragga ran on to get second place, ahead of Yorkist in third spot.
