Remembering Rex honours Melanie Graham
Under the auspices of the Rex Nettleford Foundation enthusiasts of the arts celebrated the work and life of the late creative extraordinaire after whom it is named at the Little Theatre on Wednesday, February 19.
As has become customary, performances were mounted by the National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC), NDTC Singers and Musicians, and the University Singers.
The 2025 honoree was former NDTC principal dancer Melanie Jean Graham, who was overcome by the recognition.
Remembering Rex is an annual creative showcase held in honour of Professor Rex Nettleford, co-founder of the NDTC and former Vice Chancellor of The University of the West Indies.
Among the works presented the Nettleford-choreographed Spirits At A Gathering (1995) and
Gerrehbenta (1983), opening and closing the show, respectively. Present NDTC Artistic Director Marlon D Simms mounted his own Creed (2024), along with Garfield Lemonius’s Flight (2014) and Orville McFarlane’s Circa 2K (2023).
The NDTC Singers thrilled with the Dr Kathy Brown-arranged South African Freedom Tribute (2024). The University Singers were in fine form for Noel Dexter’s Freedom is Coming (1986) and Asikatali (1986), Franklin Halliburton’s 1865: An opera based on the Morant Bay Rebellion Finale, an I Three’s Medley arranged by Carol Ann Dexter, among other pieces.
Presentations were also made of the Rex Nettleford Foundation Cornwall College Scholarship and Rex Nettleford Hall Scholarship. The foundation has been working to identify students who exhibit the promise of the extraordinary talents to assist in their development so that they can contribute to the legacy in the world of dance, culture and academia.
