Martinique signs agreement to join Caricom; awaits final ratification
MARTINIQUE has taken a major step toward joining the Caribbean Community (Caricom) as an associate member, signing an accession agreement during the 48th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of Caricom, in Barbados. The agreement was signed by Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, chair of Caricom, and Serge Letchimy, president of the Territorial Collectivity of Martinique (CTM).
The French territory’s accession remains subject to final ratification by the French National Assembly, which must approve the Protocol on Privileges and Immunities before membership can be formalised.
“This is a historic moment for Martinique and for Caricom,” Letchimy said during the signing ceremony. “We look forward to strengthening our ties with our Caribbean neighbours.”
Martinique’s inclusion in Caricom is expected to enhance regional cooperation in economic development, health care, education, transport, and disaster risk management. As part of the European Union, Martinique also offers a unique opportunity to bridge Caribbean nations with European markets.
Martinique first applied for Caricom membership more than a decade ago. Its accession builds on previous steps toward regional integration, including associate member status with organisations such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (2012), the Association of Caribbean States (2014), and Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (2015).
Caricom Secretary General Dr Carla Barnett welcomed Martinique’s move, highlighting its potential to foster economic diversification and cultural exchange across the region. “Martinique’s membership will strengthen our collective ability to address shared challenges,” she said.
Martinique’s accession to Caricom is poised to yield numerous benefits for the region. The move is expected to unlock new opportunities for trade between the Caribbean and European markets, fostering economic growth and cooperation. Additionally, Martinique’s entry into Caricom will strengthen collaboration in key areas such as education, security, and crisis management, ultimately enhancing regional resilience. The accession will also facilitate professional and academic exchanges among regional stakeholders, promoting knowledge sharing and cultural understanding. Furthermore, Martinique’s membership will deepen tourism and cultural ties among Caricom member states, enriching the region’s cultural heritage.
Caricom currently comprises 15 member states and six associate members, representing approximately 18 million people across the Caribbean. Known for its diversity in language and culture, Caricom seeks to promote economic integration and sustainable development among its members.
For Martinique, this accession reaffirms its commitment to deepening its Caribbean identity while fostering innovation and regional partnerships.
