Coach Busby eyes broader development of senior women’s football team
Jamaica’s senior Reggae Girlz are gearing up for two highly anticipated friendly matches against Peru — set for February 23 and 26 at the Estadio Miquel Grau in Piura — but Head Coach Hubert Busby has his sights set on a broader vision.
He’s prioritising a unified approach across the senior men’s and women’s teams, as well as fostering strong connections with youth teams. This strategic alignment aims to create a seamless pipeline for player development, nurturing young talent and setting the stage for long-term success.
“We are really pleased to have secured these two matches against another quality opposition in Peru. It gives us an opportunity to play another quality team. As for the bigger picture, I think what’s been good is the continuous alignment between myself and the senior men’s staff in terms of things we’re looking to do. We’re looking to implement it from a programming standpoint,” Busby said.
“Also, it has been really positive to be able to assist where I can, and having discussions with our youth 17s and 20s and coaches as well, because it is obvious that we are building a programme which is important, especially on the women’s side where players at 16, 17 years of age, as we found out, kind of trickle into the system relatively. And so, we want to make sure that we are monitoring those players and providing support where that is needed, which is very important,” he further said.
Busby also emphasised the importance of continuous evaluation and monitoring of his players.
“Really, for us, it is just about the continuous evaluation of these players. Close to two months now since we had the group in Montego Bay, evaluating our pool of over 60 players and seeing where they are and monitoring them, making sure that they know as well that we are monitoring their progress to the best of their abilities,” he explained.
With the World Cup qualifiers approaching, Busby acknowledged that the team’s preparation windows are shortening. However, he remains committed to utilising every opportunity to improve and prepare his team for the challenges ahead.
“And then, we just continue to progress with these batches, with the back of our minds that these windows are shortening from now until we get to the World Cup qualifiers that follow, we are making sure that every window is being utilised, and that is obviously something we are grateful for, as we continue to have that in mind,” he said.
