Atomica favoured for Chairman’s Trophy feature
The $2-million Chairman’s Trophy, a premier Graded Stakes/Open Allowance event, takes centre stage on tomorrow’s 10-race card at Caymanas Park.
This highly anticipated contest pits three-year-olds and upwards against each other over a challenging 7½ furlongs (1,500m) distance.
The spotlight will shine brightly on the renewed rivalry between two racing superstars: former two-time Horse of the Year Atomica and the ultra-talented Pack Plays. This thrilling match-up promises to deliver an unforgettable experience for racing enthusiasts.
The Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide’s racing experts take a closer look at each runner and their chances of winning.
1. POWER FROM ABOVE: (5 ch m by Key to Power – Blufield) — Realistically, Power From Above has little chance of winning against this strong field. While she has shown glimpses of talent in the past, her recent form has been inconsistent, and she faces a significant step up in class here.
2. CALIFORNIA CROWN: (4 ch c by Hedge Fund – Dream Big) — Although California Crown enters this race on a two-race winning streak, it’s unlikely to continue here. His previous victories came against weaker opposition, and he’ll need to improve significantly to challenge the top contenders.
3. BARNABY (USA): (4 b c by Tapiture – Giant Diva) — This capable foreigner finished second to
Run Julie Run over 7 furlongs (1,400m) on January 1. With the extra half-furlong, Barnaby could spring a surprise. He’s been working well for this race and has the potential to upset the favorites.
4. ATOMICA: (6 ch m by Nuclear Wayne – Honkeytonkville) — In her seasonal debut,
Atomica finished third behind Pack Plays and Wall Street Trader. However, the additional furlong could work in her favour, allowing her to turn the tables and win. Atomica is a proven champion with a strong record, and she should not be underestimated.
5. PACK PLAYS (USA): (4 dk b/br c by Stay Thirsty – Standard Deal) — Pack Plays easily won the Eileen Cliggott Memorial Trophy on January 25. Although travelling further for this race, the distance shouldn’t trouble Pack Plays, making him a strong contender. He’s shown impressive speed and endurance in his previous starts, and he’ll likely be a major factor in the outcome.
6. MAMMA MIA: (5 ch m by Soul Warrior – Princess Geeta) — Mamma Mia will likely make her presence felt early in the race, but her chances of winning are uncertain. She’s shown flashes of brilliance, but inconsistency has been a issue in her career. Still, she could play a role in shaping the pace and outcome of the race.
