UWI Mona gets new security manager amid calls for tighter access to campus
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Marlon Nesbeth has been appointed as Campus Security Manager for The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona, Observer Online has learned.
His appointment follows media reports and social media outrage from students sharing safety concerns on the Mona campus.
Several students claimed their safety concerns were being dismissed while others called for the generally open campus to restrict access.
The university had refuted some of those social media claims including reports of a gunpoint robbery at a bank on campus.
The university had said several new measures were being put in place to increase security on the campus, including increased entry point security and the contraction of more security teams for quick response to incidents.
