JUTC strike ends as agreement reached between union and management
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Normalcy is set to resume across the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) network after the company and the University and Allied Workers’ Union (UAWU) reached an agreement to end the bus drivers’ strike.
Following discussions at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security on Tuesday, February 18, both parties agreed to terms that will see bus services restored by 5:00 pm Tuesday evening.
As part of the agreement, the driver involved in last Friday’s altercation has been granted sick leave based on medical recommendations.
Meanwhile, the two Franchise Protection Inspectors (FPI) linked to the incident will be placed on administrative leave.
Both parties have also committed to participating in an investigation process, which is expected to be completed within two weeks. A follow-up meeting is scheduled at the Ministry of Labour on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 9:00 am
Additionally, the agreement ensures that there will be no victimisation of any employees involved in the matter.
With the strike now over, the JUTC is urging commuters to expect a gradual return to normal bus operations and has thanked the public for their patience.
In response to the disruptions, Transport Minister Daryl Vaz announced plans to propose a contingency measure involving security forces.
“I am going to be proposing that the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Defence Force have personnel trained to handle these buses, especially the bigger buses, so that in the event of any future disruption of service we can call out on a minimum basis,” he said.
