G2K slams PNP women as being hypocritical for comments made on George Wright’s re-admission
KINGSTON, Jamaica–The youth arm of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), Generation 2000 (G2K), has hit back at comments made by women of the People’s National Party (PNP) at a press conference Tuesday morning condemning the re-admission of George Wright in the JLP.
G2K, in a media release on Tuesday, argued that matters relating to “gender-based violence and rehabilitation are far too serious to be addressed in the tribal, politically opportunistic, and hypocritical manner in which women from the PNP approached these issues” during its media conference.
“The PNP women staged a media conference and castigated the re-admission of George Wright to the Jamaica Labour Party, despite the fact that Wright, who was the subject of speculation but was never charged, has taken several mitigating steps, including two years of counselling, and has committed himself to marriage,” it said.
“Generation 2000 condemns the opportunistic display by the PNP women, including Patricia Duncan-Sutherland, Gabrielle Morris, Angela Brown Burke, and Denise Daley, who, at their media conference today, appeared to be attempting to prey on the emotions of Jamaicans while betraying their inconsistency and hypocrisy.”
G2K further said the women of the PNP were silent on matters relating to its members, namely Natalie Neita, Mikael Phillips, and Jolyan Silvera, who, according to G2K, were arrested and charged with serious alleged criminal acts of physical violence.
“We are hopeful that the PNP women who were also silent when it came to the public attention that the female partner of Phillip Paulwell was charged with murdering the mother of one of his children and her 10-month-old child will engage in introspection, recognise their hypocrisy, and adopt a more serious approach to the crucial issues of domestic violence and rehabilitation. We are also disappointed that the PNP women failed to clarify at their media conference today why, when Mrs Melissa Silvera was brutally murdered allegedly by their colleague, the party leadership initially announced via social media that the mother of three had passed away in her sleep,” G2K said.
G2K said it sympathises with every victim of domestic violence and is encouraged that the Jamaica Labour Party administration is committed to protecting women from gender-based violence, including the opening of shelters, moves to further strengthen the Domestic Violence Act, the passage of the Sexual Harassment Act, and the establishment of a hotline.
