Champions Manchester High off to winning start in Grace Headley Cup
DEFENDING champions Manchester High got off to winning start in the rural Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Grace Headley Cup, getting the better of former champions Holmwood Technical by 33 runs in last week’s second round of games.
At Manchester High, the home team, having missed the first round of the tournament the previous week, made 143 all out as Demario Hall top-scored with 49. Holmwood’s leg-spinner Kevaugn Flemming claimed four wickets.
Manchester’s off-spinner Barrington Simpson followed up with six for 27 as Holmwood were dismissed for 110. Throwyan Palmer made 33 for Holmwood.
At Munro College, the home team beat Cross Keys High by 88 runs.
Munro, led by Jahiem Bennett (77) and Davalier Nelson (47), first made 199 all out against Cross Keys High’s Shandae Mitchell (5-84).
In the field, Munro were led by Brian Wynter’s three wickets for 28 as Cross Keys were bowled out for 111, with Ravi Robinson top scoring with 61.
At Garvey Maceo High, the home team defeated Clarendon College by four wickets.
Batting first, Clarendon College made 146 all out as Terome Gayle led the way with 51 and Danjay Larmond (35) against Dantay Dillon’s 5-45.
Garvey Maceo responded with 147 for six. Garfield Tomlinson was the leading batsman with 74 while Dillon made 38.
At Green Pond High, the home team beat St James High by eight wickets. St James High made 40 all out before Green Pond High replied with 43 for two.
At Port Esquivel, Old Harbour High beat York Castle High by nine wickets. York Castle High were bowled out for 29, with Tavar Powell taking seven wickets for two runs. Old Harbour High replied with 30 for one.
At Content Gardens, Tacky High’s 14-year-old leg spinner Shavaughn Boyd grabbed eight wickets for nine runs to lead his school to a 159-run win over Ocho Rios High.
Asked to bat first, Tacky High made 203 all out as Tyson Gordon top-scored with 50 while Jaquan Jackson contributed 47 and Aan Ennis 42. Undermined by Boyd, Ocho Rios High folded for 44.
At Windalco Sports Club, Dinthill Technical High School beat Brown’s Town High by 25 runs. Batting first, Dinthill made 54 all out against Gavin Edwards with three wickets for 14 runs.
Brown’s Town High were skittled for 29 as Kayshawn Goodhall took four wickets for no runs while Jemome Jones took three wickets for four runs.
At Sir P Oval the contest between Vere Technical and Glenmuir High ended in a draw, with Vere’s Leon Palmer stroking an unbeaten century.
Palmer’s 109 not out carried Vere Technical to 184 for four. Glenmuir High were 97 for three, with Trevon Jones not out on 34 when stumps were drawn.
At Black River High, medium pacer Demar Morgan took 10 wickets for two runs to lead Black River High to a 150-run win over St James High.
Eejay Spence made 56 not out, and Davian Mason 33, as Black River High rushed to 169 for three wickets declared. Confronted by Morgan’s demolition spree, St James High were bowled out for 19.
At Cornwall College the home team, led by a century from Henzell Evans, beat Cambridge High by 73 runs.
Evans hammered 110 and Dean Williams 34 as Cornwall made 221 all out against Cambridge High’s Kavian Richards who took 6-47.
Evans then completed a good, all-round performance with 3 for 26 while Damion Daley took three for 32 as Cambridge High were restricted to 148 all out.
At Green Pond High, many-time champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) made light work of their hosts, winning by 10 wickets.
Green Pond High were dismissed for 41, with STETHS spinners Demitri Binns and Tyreek Bryan taking three wickets each. STETHS cruised to 42 for no loss, with openers Kevaun Brown and Humero Reid unbeaten on 20 each.
At Holmwood Technical field Clarendon College beat Alphansus Davis High by 10 wickets after dismissing their opponents for just seven runs.
Clarendon College seamer Shakeil Walters took six wickets for four runs while off-spinner Terrence Gayle took four for two to dismantle the Alphansus Davis batting.
Clarendon College then strolled to nine without loss.
At Garvey Maceo High the home team beat Claude McKay High by 162 runs.
Garfield Tomlinson hit 101 not out as Garvey Maceo piled up 202 for four wickets. Claude McKay were dismissed for 60, with Tomlinson, Khimani McDonald and Dantay Dillon taking two wickets each.
