Record-breaking yellowfin tuna haul marks spectacular start to fishing season
THE prestigious Royal Jamaica Yacht Club Fishing Tournament marked an extraordinary start to Jamaica’s 2025 fishing season. Participating vessels reported unprecedented yellowfin tuna catches exceeding 250 lbs, with the total catch reaching 1,000 lbs.
Greg Christian’s vessel Juicey claimed the tournament’s top honours, securing a $300,000 cash prize plus a $100,000 gift certificate from JL Audio. The Carimed executive’s victory highlighted an exceptional day of competitive fishing, with 13 boats vying for over $1,000,000 in cash and prizes. The event was made possible through the generous support of major sponsors including Hi-Pro and Seaboard Marine.
With an impressive 178.5 points, Peter Cowan’s Integrity secured second place and a $200,000 cash prize.
Mutual Fun, owned by Sterling Asset Management’s President and Chief Executive Officer Charles Ross and skippered by Michael Ammar Jr, rounded out the top three, earning a $100,000 cash prize.
The tournament, Jamaica’s traditional fishing season opener for over two decades, showcased the waters’ abundant pelagic fishing opportunities. Competitors noted that this year’s event produced the most significant yellowfin tuna catches in recent memory.
“This tournament’s incredible tuna haul demonstrates the rich marine resources in Jamaican waters,” said organiser Ammar Jr. “The Royal Jamaica Yacht Club continues to uphold its legacy as the premier host for Caribbean sport fishing events.”
The tournament’s success signals a promising start to Jamaica’s 2025 fishing season, reinforcing RJYC’s position as a cornerstone of Jamaica’s sport fishing community.
