Manifesting success: Dwayne Manning’s journey to control room operator

“SUCCESS is not just about talent—it’s about vision, dedication, and the courage to seize opportunities. Manifest what you want, back it up with hard work, and trust the process.” When Dwayne Manning joined Jamaica Energy Partners in 2019 as a plant technician, he set a five-year goal to earn a promotion. It wasn’t just a dream—it was a commitment to himself. He embraced every challenge as an opportunity to grow, pushed himself beyond his limits, and continuously sought ways to improve. Today, his journey has come full circle as he steps into his new role as control room operator —a testament to his perseverance, skill, and dedication to his craft.

Manning discovered his love for engineering in ninth grade, where his talent for technical drawing and hands-on work sparked his interest. As he progressed, subjects like building and design, physics, chemistry, and mathematics further solidified his career aspirations. Encouragement from teachers and discussions with peers helped him see the vast possibilities in engineering, leading him to pursue a degree at the Caribbean Maritime University.

Like many great careers, his began with hands-on experience. His first job as an operations technician trainee exposed him to engine systems, plant operations, and industry best practices.

Working alongside experienced professionals, he developed a deep appreciation for the essential services the company provides—fuelling his drive to excel, innovate, and make a difference.

Through hard work, persistence, and continuous learning, he embraced every challenge as a stepping stone to growth. His proactive approach led to a pivotal moment in his career — seeking opportunities for self-improvement, which eventually resulted in his promotion.

“I didn’t initially see it as a chance for promotion; I just wanted to grow and challenge myself. But growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone,” he said.

As a plant technician, Manning developed a strong foundation that prepared him for his new role. His ability to prioritise tasks, anticipate potential issues and communicate effectively set him apart. More importantly, his willingness to learn, strong work ethic, and technical expertise made him a natural fit for the promotion.

“I believe my success is rooted in my ‘student mentality.’ Staying open to learning, absorbing knowledge from my mentors, and applying myself has helped me reach this point—and I plan to keep growing,” he expressed.

In his new role, Manning will play a crucial part in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the facilities. He will be responsible for monitoring systems, responding to alarms, and making critical real-time decisions that contribute to the company’s mission. He is particularly excited about applying his technical expertise in a leadership capacity while mentoring and guiding his colleagues.

Transitioning into a new role always comes with challenges, but for Manning, the biggest lesson has been self-belief and resilience.

“At first, the transition felt overwhelming — but I remind myself: ‘Try before you cry.’ Instead of doubting myself, I embrace the challenge, put in the effort, and things fall into place,” he affirmed.

This mindset, coupled with unwavering support from his family, mentors, and colleagues, has made his journey rewarding.

For those looking to advance within the company, Manning shares one key piece of advice: “Growth happens outside of your comfort zone. Don’t shy away from challenges — embrace them. Take opportunities when they come, keep learning, and push yourself beyond what you think is possible.”

This promotion is just the beginning. With his eyes set on the future, Manning aspires to take on senior leadership roles such as engineering manager or plant manager, where he can drive strategic growth and mentor the next generation of engineers.
