Pack Plays steals the show
Despite a small field of just five runners, the 2025 Eileen Cliggott Memorial Trophy delivered thrilling action at the track on Saturday, January 25.
American-bred Pack Plays, trained by Ricardo Mathie and ridden by visiting Panamanian jockey Ismael Velasquez, dominated the competition with a stunning four-length victory in the Graded Stakes/Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over 6 ½ furlongs (1,300m). He stopped the clock in 1:18.1 (23.2 x 46.4 x 1:11.3).
The Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide breaks down the results:
FIRST — PACK PLAYS (USA): This marks Pack Plays’ second win from five starts, with both victories occurring at 6 ½ furlongs. His first win was notable, as he clocked an impressive time of 1:17.3. Getting off to a strong start, Velasquez skilfully managed Pack Plays. In his five attempts thus far, Pack Plays has demonstrated a propensity for speed, with middle distances being his optimal choice. He was the long-time leader in the Mouttet Mile but fell back in the last two furlongs, ultimately finishing sixth, five lengths behind the winner, Funcaandun. This foreigner has ascended to the ranks of top sprinters, alongside competing horses like Bootylicious, Desert of Malibu, and Legacy Isle. Much credit for the continued development of this four-year-old should go to trainer Mathie, a recent graduate of the Trainers’ School. With a calm demeanour and a genuine passion for the horses, he is well guided by his father, Rowan, a seasoned trainer — ensuring Ricardo stays on the right path.
SECOND — WALL STREET TRADER (USA): This horse has exhibited inconsistent form since his last victory on August 1, 2024. Wall Street Trader’s second-place finish provided owner Victor Maine with a one-two finish. Notably, Wall Street Trader is trained by Rowan Mathie. At six years old, he must act quickly to stay competitive among the improving top grade.
THIRD — ATOMICA: A two-time Horse of the Year, Atomica is not known for sprinting but excels with her pace at longer distances. Her performance in the Eileen Cliggott was lacklustre, as the younger
Pack Plays swiftly took the lead, leaving Atomica unable to manage the sprinting challenge. Many racegoers are beginning to speculate whether it’s time for this outstanding locally bred mare to head to the breeding shed.
FOURTH — IS THAT A FACT (USA): After a disappointing showing in the Mouttet Mile last December, expectations were higher for Is That A Fact in the Eileen Cliggott. However, he was unable to deliver on those expectations. Nevertheless, he should not be entirely written off for future races.
FIFTH — MONEY MARKET: Money Market struggled in this competition and will likely perform better in a lower class.
