Budapest, the Paris of the East
A visit to Budapest, Hungary, last summer was an impulsive one triggered by Lenny Kravitz’s Blue Electric Light Tour. The experience some 10 days later left me not only planning a return visit but wanting as many as possible to experience Budapest, the Paris of the East.
Let me immediately ‘fess up that my experience was pretty special. I had the perfect hosts, notably Peter and Marlene Hargitay, who not only rolled out the red carpet but afforded a unique perspective. Cordon Bleu meals courtesy of Peter included the freshest fruits, best cuts of meat as well as meals at the most memorable spots including a visit to Central Market Hall to secure premium foie gras.
Sightseeing by day with Marlene, his stunning, amicable wife, on the Hop on Hop Off Bus, included lunch at the Callas Cafe, shopping at Andrassy utca, Vaci Street, Fashion Street and people-watching while enjoying great cocktails at the W Hotel.
Hungary is home to thermal and mineral water sources. It is, too, a city conducive to leisurely walks. Consider post-dinner evening strolls along the River Danube or to the Houses of Parliament or to the life-sized bronze work on Falk Miksa Street depicting Peter Falk in the role of fictional police detective Columbo and, of course, his dog, Dog.
Another must is Marlene’s favourite artisanal Swiss chocolate Laderach. There’s so much more to experience so make plans to join us Budapest July 8-15, 2025.
