Warriors eye final spot in Dream11 cricket competition
With their sights firmly set on a top-two finish in the 2025 Jamaica Dream 11 T10 cricket competition, Cornwall Warriors are focusing on fine-tuning their game, according to Head Coach Cleaveland Davidson.
Despite a hard-fought two-wicket victory over United Stars at Sabina Park on Wednesday, Davidson acknowledged that there are areas that require improvement, particularly in batting, fielding, and catching, as the team gears up for a push to the finals.
Batting first, United Stars posted a modest 88 for 4 off their allotted 10 overs. The Warriors chased down to finish at 89-8 off 10 overs.
“So far, we have been [doing] pretty well,” Davidson, one of the country’s most popular batsmen in the 1980s, told the Jamaica Observer.
“However, there are certain areas that we need to look at to see what we can do going forward to get the best out of the players,” he added.
Davidson pinpointed batting, fielding, and catching as key areas that need attention.
“We need to work on our batting some more and in the field as well. We also need to pay some attention to our catching,” he said.
Despite these concerns, Davidson remains optimistic about his team’s chances of advancing to the finals.
“I think we have a pretty good chance of making the top two in the finals, and that is what we are working for. We are really putting in the work, and I think we can reach the finals,” Davidson noted.
The United Stars’ innings was anchored by a 60-run, second-wicket partnership between Damion Bryce (36 runs off 23 balls) and Sashana Anderson (19 runs off 19 balls). No other batsman managed to get into double figures.
Marquino Mindley, Andre A McCarthy, and Andre McCarthy took one wicket a-piece for Cornwall Warriors.
In Warriors run-chase, the Stars’ Jevone Wynter struck twice, while Fitzroy Hunter, Nkala Tracey, and Mickel Silva struck once. Those wickets left Cornwall Warriors struggling at 25-5 off 3.5 overs.
However, Damion Ebanks (13) and Howard Palmer (14) steadied the run chase for Cornwall Warriors before Omar Samuels’ 25 runs from 13 balls set up the win.
Needing 11 runs from the last over, Samuels was dismissed off the fourth ball with the Warriors on 87-8, needing just two runs to win from as many balls. Odel Samuels (zero) and Mindley (one) held their nerve and carried Cornwall Warriors to victory.
With the win, Cornwall Warriors moved to second in the six-team table on six points from four games, tied with leaders Surrey Kings and third-place Surrey Risers. United Stars remain at the bottom of the table, yet to get off the mark on zero points.
In the opening game of the double-header at the venue, Surrey Kings defeated Surrey Royals by six wickets.
Batting first, Surrey Royals posted 117 for 4 off their 10 overs, with the Kings getting 123 for 4 off 9.5 overs.
