PNP pays tribute to tennis icon Richard Russell
Kingston, Jamaica – The People’s National Party (PNP) says it is deeply saddened by the passing of Richard Russell, one of Jamaica’s greatest tennis legends.
Opposition Spokesperson on Sports, Wavell Hinds, extended his condolences to Russell’s family and the wider tennis community, recognising the profound impact he had on the sport in Jamaica.
“Richard Russell was a true pioneer. His achievements on the international stage, including being the only Jamaican to make it past the first round in all four Grand Slam tournaments—Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open—are nothing short of historic. But his legacy goes far beyond his personal accomplishments. Through the Russell Tennis Academy, he dedicated himself to developing the next generation of Jamaican talent, nurturing young athletes who will continue his work for years to come,” said Hinds.
Russell’s contributions to Jamaican sports were recognised in 2022 when he was awarded the Order of Distinction by the Jamaican Government. His impact on tennis in Jamaica remains immeasurable, and he will always be remembered for his passion, dedication, and the inspiration he brought to all who knew him.
“On behalf of the People’s National Party, I extend our deepest sympathies to Richard’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will live on, and he will be dearly missed,” Hinds concluded.
