Alleged gangster ex-soldier killed in reported clash with police
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica— A former member of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), who was discharged last year because of his alleged ties to the notorious 440 Drive Gang, was fatally shot by the police in a reported confrontation on Tuesday.
He has been identified as 24-year-old Alex Madden of a Kingston 11 address.
Reports are that about 9:00 pm on Tuesday, members of a police team were on operation in Bridgeport, Portmore, when Madden was accosted.
He reportedly challenged the cops with a firearm. The police took evasive action and fired at Madden who was hit. He was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:15 pm.
The police say a HiPoint 9mm Luger pistol, along with a magazine containing six 9mm rounds, was taken from Madden.
According to Observer Online sources, Madden is alleged to be a top-tier member of the 440 Drive Gang which has been involved in a violent conflict in the St Andrew South Police Division since last year.
He was linked to three murders and one shooting committed in the St Andrew South Police Division since November 2024.
He was also wanted for questioning in connection with an attempted murder.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing the incident.
