Envisioning a smart city
Dear Editor,
In the evolving symphony of technological progress, the vision of smart cities unfurls like a melody of promise. Across the globe, nations grapple with urbanisation’s crescendo, striving for harmony through innovation. Jamaica, cradled in the heart of the Caribbean, joins this global overture, embarking on its transformative journey towards smart cities.
A significant note in this composition sounded during the Jamaica Smart City Forum in September 2023. This pivotal gathering, orchestrated by the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) and the Tuatara Group, became a crucible for fresh ideas.
It spotlighted New Kingston as the staging ground for integrating smart technologies. As Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon articulated, this initiative reflects Jamaica’s steadfast commitment to connectivity, efficiency, and progress.
The essence of smart cities lies in their foundational pillars, as detailed in the ASEAN Smart Cities Summit and Expo 2020: smart governance, transportation, environment, economy, and citizens. Each pillar serves as a vital thread in the urban fabric, weaving a tapestry of sustainability and enhanced quality of life. Yet beneath this potential lies a shadow — the escalating menace of cyber threats.
In 2023, Jamaica faced an alarming 43 million cyberattacks, underscoring the need for robust defences. Cybersecurity experts advocate integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into security frameworks to combat the evolving nature of these threats. Kamla Hamilton, a leading voice in the field, stresses that AI is not an adversary but a critical ally, offering both shield and sword to safeguard Jamaica’s digital ambitions.
The proliferation of Internet of things (IoT) devices — spanning smartphones to smart homes — ushers in both convenience and vulnerability. This interconnected web magnifies risks, demanding proactive measures to fortify digital defences.
In parallel, the rise of electric motorcycles introduces fresh challenges, including the spectre of war-driving hacks and remote detonation via bike batteries. These risks amplify the urgency for vigilance as Jamaica integrates smart technologies into its transportation landscape.
The dream of smart cities beckons — a shimmering horizon of potential. Yet this dream is contingent on confronting cybersecurity’s complex challenges. By fostering collaboration with AI and prioritising resilience, Jamaica can stride boldly into the digital age. Together, man and machine can forge a future of safety, innovation, and brighter tomorrows.
