PNP pays tribute to Emerson Barrett, Harry Douglas
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The People’s National Party (PNP) has paid tribute to the late Emerson Genard Barrett and Harry Douglas, whom they have hailed as two stalwarts of Jamaican public life.
In a statement released late Saturday, the party expressed deep sorrow at their passing, reflecting with gratitude on the meaningful lives they lived and the impact they made on the nation.
Describing Barrett as a “towering figure in public service”, the PNP said he dedicated his life to the people of Jamaica with humility and purpose. Barrett’s contributions spanned roles as councillor, mayor of Kingston, Member of Parliament for St Andrew East Rural, minister of state, and consul general to Florida. He also served as chairman of the Social Development Commission.
Likewise, the PNP said Douglas dedicated his career to improving the lives of his constituents during his tenure as Member of Parliament for St Mary South Eastern from 1989 until his retirement in 2007. Noting his contributions to the construction of educational institutions such as Annotto Bay High School, Bromley All-Age School and St Mary Technical High School, as well as the repair and upgrading of nearly 30 other schools, the PNP said Douglas’ tenure was characterised by visionary leadership and tangible achievements.
As minister of state in the Ministry of Water and Housing, he worked to improve infrastructure and living conditions for Jamaicans.
The party said the legacy of both men will continue to inspire those who follow in their footsteps.
“The People’s National Party extends heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of Comrades Barrett and Douglas. As we celebrate their lives, we honour their steadfast dedication to service and their profound contributions to Jamaica. Their memories will forever be etched in the heart of our nation. May their souls rest in eternal peace,” the PNP said.
