Bob Marley biopic, Skip Marley, Skillibeng, Sheryl Lee Ralph earn NAACP Image nominations
Bob Marley: One Love, the 23rd highest-grossing film of 2024 in North America, earned multiple nominations in the 2025 NAACP Image Awards.
The nominations for the 56th staging of the awards were revealed on Tuesday and the Marley biopic, which has to date grossed more than US$180 million globally (US$96.9 million in North America), earned nominations for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Motion Picture.
Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, who co-wrote the screenplay with Terrence Winter, Frank E Flowers and Zach Baylin, the Bob Marley: One Love movie spent multiple weeks at the top of the US Box Office after it opened on February 14 last year.
Locally, the film’s opening day gross of US$100,000 and an 89 per cent market share set a record for the biggest box office opening of all-time in the country.
British actor Kingsley Ben-Adir, who played the role of an adult Bob Marley, earned a nomination in the Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture category, while actress Lashana Lynch, who played Bob’s wife, Rita, is nominated in the category Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture.
The soundtrack to the film Bob Marley: One Love is nominated for Outstanding Soundtrack/Compilation Album.
Actress and singer Sheryl Lee Ralph is also up for an award, as she earned a nod in the category Outstanding Supporting Actress in a comedy series for her role in Abbott Elementary, which airs on ABC.
Dancehall artiste Skillibeng’s collaboration with South African singer Tyla and Gunna,
Jump, is nominated for Outstanding International Song, so too is Close by Skip Marley.
Close, which samples Maxi Priest’s 1990 #1 Billboard hit Close to You, currently holds the #23 position on Billboard’s Rhythmic Top 40 Airplay chart.
This is Skip Marley’s second NAACP Image Award nomination. In 2021, he was nominated for Outstanding New Artiste.
American rapper Glorilla received the most nominations in the music/recording categories of the 2025 NAACP Image Awards with six nominations. Doechii, Kendrick Lamar and Usher each earned four nominations.
