Bloodshed disturbs quiet community
Man fatally shot after chopping elderly father
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — The usually quiet, residential neighbourhood on upper deCarteret Road in Mandeville erupted into chaos after a man armed with a machete chopped his 77-year-old father before being fatally shot by the police on Monday.
The deceased man, identified by relatives as Okarie Gayle, 50, reportedly attacked his father at their family home.
A police report said about 8:00 am personnel were called to a house on deCarteret Road where a man reportedly used a machete to chop his elderly father. It is reported that when the police responded, the man continued his attack and confronted the authorities. The police opened fire and shot the man.
Footage sent to the Jamaica Observer showed two police personnel instructing Gayle to drop the machete before loud explosions are heard on the 52-second video.
Gayle was pronounced dead at hospital while his father has been admitted for treatment.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing the incident.
Neighbours told the Observer that Gayle was embroiled in a long-standing dispute with his relatives who at times claimed that he suffered from a mental illness.
A social media account bearing his name and photo and on which multiple posts were made in recent years, refuted those claims.
