Sunshine Girls ready to shine
Jamaica’s Crystal Plummer confident ahead of netball series against South Africa
As Jamaica prepares to host South Africa in a highly anticipated three-match netball series later this month, Crystal Plummer, a key player for the Sunshine Girls, is exuding confidence and enthusiasm.
The series — matches scheduled for January 18, 22, and 23 at the National Indoor Sports Centre — promises to be a thrilling encounter between two of the world’s top teams, with Jamaica ranked third and South Africa fifth.
Plummer, who was part of the World Cup squad that won bronze in South Africa in 2023 and the team that triumphed in the Horizon Test Series against arch-rival England last November, is eager to face the challenge posed by the Proteas.
“South Africa is a great team to play, very competitive and I think that this Test series is going to be a great and exciting one. I mean third against fifth I just know this is a great Test series, I know we are going to do well and showcase our talents as always,” Plummer told the Jamaica Observer.
“I just think we should just remain humble, and give our very best and to just do what the coaches ask of us and we will be fine. We are expecting to do very well in this series,” the 22-year-old added.
The mid-court player is well aware of the strengths of the South African team, particularly their captain, Khanyisa Chawane.
“My main focus is whoever is in that area, but most of all, Khanyisa Chawane. I think it’s going to be a great match-up when it comes to speed,” Plummer noted.
Despite the tough competition they are expecting from South Africa, Plummer is confident in her team’s abilities.
“Preparation has been good and hard, but we’re all pushing through to be on the same page for this tour. I’ve been working on everything about my game, both at training and on my own, to put my best foot forward and do my job in the series,” she said.
“I am just working really hard and have confidence in myself and my team to get the job done [with] every opportunity I get. I am dedicated and I am willing to go the extra mile. Success only comes with hard work and I am all for that,” Plummer added.
The upcoming series against South Africa, Plummer said, is a testament to the growth and success of Jamaican netball, which continues to thrive despite limited resources compared to top rivals.
“The more we practise and have test series, the better for us. Every other country is having their test series, and it’s showing in their game. I’m still proud of the NJ [Netball Jamaica] because we’re in the top five in the world, and we don’t have test series at all, but we’re still being successful and maintaining our ranking in the world,” Plummer observed.
Plummer also acknowledged the importance of home support, expressing her gratitude to the fans who cheered the team on during their successful series against England last November.
“Firstly, I must say a huge big up to the fans. I loved the energy that we got from the fans in November; it warms my heart. I’m excited to see what happens for this tour. They help to push us, and I’d say yes, it’s an advantage, but whether we’re home or abroad, we’ll still give it our best,” she said.
Plummer again extended an invitation to the fans to come out and support the team.
“We love and respect our fans and we are looking forward to seeing you all the 18, 22 and 25 of January at the National Stadium. Tell a friend to tell another friend to come support the Sunshine Girls in the upcoming series, we are ready to showcase our talents and to have fun while doing that,” Plummer ended.
