Laban stuns rivals with electrifying win in SVREL Security Department Trophy
In a remarkable reversal of fortune, Laban, who was winless throughout the 2024 racing season, delivered a breathtaking performance to claim the $1.25-million Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL) Security Department Trophy at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Trained and part-owned by Richard Azan, along with Milad Azan, the eight-year-old bay horse Laban (Sensational Slam – For Trixie) produced a stunning come-from-behind victory in the three-year-old and upward Overnight Allowance contest over five furlongs (1,000m) straight.
Ridden by Panamanian jockey Ismael Velasquez, Laban completed the distance in a blistering 57.3 (23.2 x 45.3), leaving rivals in awe.
Velasquez expertly held Laban off the pace, watching as Joy Is Golden (Richie Shakes), Madelyn’s Sunshine (Trevor Simpson), and Mrs Lyndhurst (Oneil Mullings) set the early fractions.
Velasquez timed his move to perfection, asking Laban to unleash his speed as they crossed the dummy rails. The bay horse responded magnificently, surging forward to edge out Joy Is Golden and Mrs Lyndhurst at the wire.
Champion trainer Jason DaCosta and Robert Halledeen teamed up to two races on the nine-race card.
DaCosta and Halledeen won with Stormbringer in the second race and California Crown in the seventh race, the $1.19-million St Catherine Cup.
Racing continues on Saturday.
