Pops YG goes viral with ‘Granny’
TikTok sensation-turned-dancehall artiste Pops YG is generating a big buzz with his debut song, Granny, a song that reflects society’s obsession with wealth and the status it grants.
The track pulsates with the energy of newfound wealth as Pops YG effortlessly weaves tales of excess, opulence and his island rich lifestyle.
“The video is going hard online, 144,000 views and counting since its release two weeks ago. The response from the fans has been great, crazy flames and heart emojis,” Pops YG shared.
The song was produced by Cashment Entertainment while visuals were provided by the Chuck Starr Visuals Team.
On Granny, the Tik Toker-turned-deejay boasts: “box a money pon the jet that’s blue/one girl lef me and mi get back two”.
Pops YG also drops his popular viral line on this song, deejaying: “we go buy back a better Benz”, a slang from one of his viral Tik Tok videos.
Given the early success of Granny, the young dancehall deejay appears to be on his way professionally, bringing his TikTok followers along for the ride.
“The fans dem love wah a gwaan, dem love the flavour and the flow,” he said.
Pops YG aka HomeTown Boss, who is just 17 years old, first gained popularity online for his flamboyant lifestyle and catchy phrases such as “up inna dem hometown” and his hilarious videos on Tik Tok about his Benz motor vehicle, feeding his hogs with KFC chicken, and his flashy, flamboyant lifestyle in rural Jamaica.
Over the past year, he has amassed over 180,000 followers on Tik Tok and is now seeking to leverage that popularity as a deejay to become a force in dancehall circles. He first pivoted to dancehall late last year, a move which is now fuelled by the growing popularity of Granny.
He made the move after his rapid ascent on social media following fellow dancehall artiste Squash’s decision to use Pops YG’s voice saying, “lone big breeze… up inna dem home town, cap dem a cap, hide dem a hide,” in the hit song Big Breeze.
Pops YG grew up in the community of Warsop, Trelawny and attended Holmwood High school in Manchester. He started recording songs in 2024. The artiste’s manager Cashment, endorsed his young charge saying that Pops YG is a natural entertainer with his humor and “edgy dancehall personality” — all in evidence on TikTok— and said he has instantly shown promising signs as a dancehall deejay.
“Pops YG is a name to watch in 2025,” Cashment said.
