IMPORTANT TEST
Sunshine Girls star defender bracing for South Africa challenge
National senior netball Captain Shamera Sterling-Humphrey says that no stone will be left unturned when she and her teammates take on South Africa in a three-Test home series at the National Indoor Sports Complex. The matches in this highly anticipated series are set for January 18, 22, and 25.
The Sunshine Girls are coming off an important 2-1 series victory over the England Roses in their four-Test series, a result that propelled them from fourth to third, allowing them to leapfrog their English rivals and return to the top three in world netball.
Now, with South Africa in the cross-hairs, the star defender has made it clear that the Jamaicans are looking to continue their form and make a statement in the coming series.
“Yes, we want to win all these three games,” said Sterling-Humphrey. “Playing the English series gave us a huge confidence boost going into this series against the South Africans.”
However, Sterling-Humphrey, who is rated as one of the best defenders in the world, indicated that they will not be taking their opponents for granted and are expecting and preparing for a tough series.
“You can never take an international netball team lightly because we know that any team that comes out to play against Jamaica always puts out their best,” she said. “I know that they want to win as well, so I know that they will put up a fight and so will the Jamaican team.”
Sterling-Humphrey, 29, who plies her trade for the Adelaide Thunderbirds in Australia, highlighted that the series forms a very crucial part of their preparations for the 2027 Netball World Cup, which will be held in Sydney, Australia.
“This is a very important series for us because we want to get the practice leading up to the World Cup. I remember in previous years leading up to the World Cup, we weren’t able to secure series like this,” she stated. “It is good to have these types of series to give us the practice that we need leading up to the World Cup.”
“I am looking forward once again to playing in front of my home crowd, having my family there, and also giving the rookies that we have in our team some game time on court,” Sterling-Humphrey added.
She also stressed that they have been putting a lot of work into their preparations for the series and is urging everyone to come out in their numbers and support the Sunshine Girls in all three matches.
“It is very important, because in our last Test series against England, the fans came out and supported us. I think that for this series, they will show up for us, and they will be there, so we are looking forward to that.”
“The preparations have been going great because the girls are in training, and we are working on the things that we didn’t execute well in the England series, so we are looking forward to executing them better in this series against South Africa,” Sterling-Humphrey said.
