Traffic changes in downtown Kingston today for UDC Fireworks Festival
THE Urban Development Corporation (UDC) has announced a series of road closures and traffic changes to accommodate the highly anticipated Fireworks Festival 2024 this evening.
According to the UDC, these adjustments will ensure the safety and convenience of attendees while facilitating the smooth execution of the event.
Some of the traffic changes took effect last Sunday while others will be implemented today.
Restrictions imposed on Sunday included no left turns onto Ocean Boulevard at the intersections with Nethersole Place and Church Street. Barriers have been implemented at strategic points to enforce these changes, while access will be maintained for essential deliveries and parking.
Starting at 4:00 pm today, sections of Church Street, King Street, Peter’s Lane, Orange Street, Princess Street, and West Street will be converted to two-way traffic or partially closed.
Port Royal Street will experience restricted access, including no left turns onto, or from, Ocean Boulevard. Barriers will be installed to guide traffic flow, ensuring safety and ease of movement during the festival.
Normal traffic patterns will resume at midnight on January 1, 2025 for changes implemented today and by 6:00 pm on January 2, 2025 for changes that took effect on Sunday.
The UDC said the Jamaica Constabulary Force, which has played a key role as a valued partner of Fireworks Festivals over the years, will guide traffic arrangements in Montego Bay, St James, and Ocho Rios, St Ann, respectively.
Motorists and pedestrians are being encouraged to plan their routes in advance and try to use the routes that allow easy entry to and exit from downtown Kingston.
In addition, motorists are urged to adhere to posted signage and instructions from traffic management personnel.
The 21st staging of the UDC Fireworks Festival in Kingston will culminate in a spectacular display of pyrotechnics at midnight.
This breath-taking finale is expected to provide a fitting welcome to 2025, uniting attendees in celebration and hope for the year ahead.
The event, as in previous years, will feature a variety of culinary offerings, a kiddies village, family-oriented activities, and an entertainment package.
