JPL rolls on with full slate of games
Leaders Mount Pleasant FA will be going after a sixth straight win in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) when they take on fifth placed Waterhouse FC at Drewsland Stadium in one of seven second round games scheduled today.
The teams had played out a 0-0 draw in the first round and today’s games will be the final set of matches to be played in this calendar year. They will see second placed Arnett Gardens also seeking to make demands for a first round draw when they host Chapelton Maroons at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
Just a point separates Mount Pleasant (31) and Arnett Gardens (30), while third placed Montego Bay United (MBU), who are on 28 points and unbeaten over their last four games, will seek to avenge their only home loss so far this season when they travel to Harbour View, who are two points above the relegation places.
Mount Pleasant, who have been to the last two finals, have been the form team over the last eight rounds, taking 22 of a possible 24 points and have scored 22 of their 34 goals tallied so far.
Waterhouse FC, a semi-finalist last season, have won once in their last five games, scoring a mere four goals and will face the competition’s joint best defence, Mount Pleasant only allowing nine goals all season, the same as Arnett Gardens.
Daniel Green and Shaquille Bradford have been in good scoring form for the Theodore Whitmore-coached Mount Pleasant and Kimoni Bailey, who is joint top scorer with eight goals, will be hoping to get his name on the score sheet as well.
Arnett are also in good form, losing just once in their last 11 games and rebounded from that setback to edge Dunbeholden 1-0 a week ago and will be hoping to make up for their 1-1 draw in their first meeting this season.
Chapelton Maroons, who bounced back from relegation two seasons ago to return to the JPL at the first opportunity, have won their last two games, including a 3-1 reversal over defending champions Cavalier FC and will fancy their chances at the venue where they also play their home games.
Javel Ellis and Jamari Howell have scored in Chapelton’s last two games but could find Arnett’s defence tougher to get past. They could be chasing Warner Brown and Kimani Arbourne, who have combined to score 15 of Arnett’s 21 goals scored so far.
MBU will hope to add to Harbour View’s miseries while taking revenge for their first-round loss when they meet at ‘The Compound’ with the home team winning once in their last 11 games, having dropped to 12th place in the tables on 12 points.
Harbour View’s first job will be to try to contain the third-highest scoring team in the league who will be led by the pair of Brian Brown and Shaniel Thomas. They have combined for 13 goals while Owayne Gordon can also be depended on to provide goals as well.
Harbour View’s defence has been shaky, giving up 22 goals, 17 in their last 11 games.
Champions Cavalier are coming off a 3-1 win over Humble Lion and will be looking to repeat their first-round win over Portmore United who have slipped to sixth in the tables, picking up three points from their last five games.
Cavalier, the Concacaf Caribbean Cup champions, boast the second best scoring record in the league and could make it a long afternoon for Portmore United if Jalmaro Calvin, Shaquille Stein and Dwayne Atkinson turn up in goal-scoring mood.
Tivoli Gardens need to close the gap on the play-off spots, presently six points adrift and could start with a win over Humble Lion in their game at Stadium East.
Tivoli are coming off a 2-0 win over Molynes United last weekend and could take advantage of a Humble Lion team that has not won in their last seven games.
