Local craft vendor Denese Auld loves sharing pieces of Jamaica
In every nook and cranny of Jamaica, there are Familiar Faces who have become an integral part of a community, but some of us don’t even know their name. In fact, some of their stories remain untold. Who are they? Where are they from? And how did they get there? The Sunday Observer Familiar Face series explores these and more!
A little over 19 years ago, Denese Auld started working at a store in Kingston Craft Market in the capital city’s downtown business district. There, she fell in love with helping tourists find souvenirs to mark their visit to the island.
Today, she is the proud owner of her own store at the same location.
She told the Jamaica Observer that her journey began with a visit to the Universal Placement Services, where she searched for a job. Auld said that she was placed at the craft market and for 10 years worked hard to build her reputation in the space.
An extrovert at heart, she said her charisma and dedication earned her a loyal customer base, which grew her popularity. In a leap of faith, she decided to open her own craft store inside the market and has been self-employed for eight years.
The store showcases a wide variety of Jamaican-made items, from wood carvings to leather shoes and clothes.
While business has been slow, she said she cannot envision herself anywhere else and urged both locals and tourists to support the craft vendors who play a vital role in sharing Jamaican culture.
Check out these five things about this familiar face and scan the QR code for her video chat with the Sunday Observer.

On days when business is booming but her colleagues are not having much luck, the craft vendor shared that she often shares her profit with other vendors in the market so that they can make ends meet.
2) A mother to three boys, Auld shares that she loves her children with her whole heart.
3) If music is being played, you can be sure to find Auld singing along. She loves a good karaoke session and is not afraid to show off her vocals.
4) If a clothing item or accessory is made of leather, rest assured that Auld will love it. She shared that she greatly appreciates the artistry, time, and dedication that goes into making leather pieces and will always support those who make the items.
5) A good seafood boil is the way to her heart.
