Carole Joan Crawford was truly outstanding, says Grange
MINISTER of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange on Tuesday hailed Carole Joan Crawford as a “truly outstanding woman”.
Crawford, 81, who died December 18, 2024, created history in August 1963 when she, at age 20, became Miss World 1963 — the first Jamaican and Caribbean woman to win the prestigious title
Said Grange: “Another of our truly outstanding women has left us with the passing of Carole Joan Crawford, who was a trailblazer if there was ever one, creating history when she became Miss World 1963.
According to Grange, “Joan was unique in another way; she defied the convention of the day, which called for taller contestants and won the crown standing barely over five feet. She certainly put Jamaica on the map in the world of beauty pageantry”.
Said Grange: “Carole must also be lauded for a life dedicated to community development, and the empowerment of young women. She also promoted the vibrancy of Jamaicans and our culture.”
She expressed sympathies to Crawford’s family, relatives, friends, and associates.
