Every Mikkle Foundation gets boost for children with special needs
IN an effort to share the joy of the season, the Desnoes & Geddes (D&G) Foundation has contributed $100,000 to the Every Mikkle Foundation to support its annual Special Needs Fun Day, scheduled for today.
The event, held every year since 2013, will focus on bringing joy and relief to children living with disabilities, HIV/AIDS, mental health challenges, and other circumstances that often leave them marginalised.
“This contribution will go a long way in ensuring these children have a memorable day. Many of them face significant challenges — some use wheelchairs or crutches, and the majority have HIV/AIDS. It has been especially rough for them because most were either born with the virus or contracted it at a very young age.
“Beyond that, we provide support to pregnant teens and address a range of mental health conditions, from autism to other developmental disorders,” said executive director of the Every Mikkle Foundation Dr Rachel Brown.
She highlighted the close relationships the Every Mikkle Foundation has built with children from several facilities, including the Dare to Care Home, Martha’s House, St Anthony’s & Mary’s Child, and Matthew 25:40.
“These children are like family to us. We don’t focus on their disabilities but instead treat them as equals while catering to their individual needs. The fun day helps create a sense of belonging for them, filling gaps where family support might be absent,” added Dr Brown.
She pointed out that Every Mikkle Foundation operates with a youth-led and youth-based structure, holding the philosophy that every little thing adds up.
“There are countless people in need across Jamaica, and every little effort matters. Whether through our foundation or independently, corporate engagement can truly transform lives,” said Dr Brown as she urged other corporate entities to get involved and make a positive impact through philanthropy.
Today’s Special Needs Fun Day will include gifts, food, and activities designed for the children’s enjoyment.
The D&G Foundation’s donation supports the event’s logistics, ensuring a well-organised set-up and a seamless experience for all participants.
In addition to the fun day, the Every Mikkle Foundation extends its support with additional contributions of essential items like canned goods, rice, oil, and toiletries to children’s homes, as well as school supplies to assist students in January during the back-to-school period.
D&G Foundation Accountant Dennis Beckford emphasised the significance of supporting special needs initiatives, especially during the festive season.
“Special needs communities are often overlooked, yet their challenges deserve our attention and care. This Christmas we saw an opportunity to make a meaningful difference through the Special Needs Fun Day by the Every Mikkle Foundation.
“Our contribution is a way to spread Christmas cheer and affirm the value and worth of these children, reminding them they are seen, supported, and cherished,” said Beckford.
He underscored that the D&G Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering positive social impact, particularly for underserved communities.
