Belize police launch drug trafficking probe after plane landing
BELMOPAN, Belize (CMC) -Police say they are investigating the weekend landing of a plane in the remote part of the Toledo District, the country’s southernmost district and home to nearly 1,700 square miles of rainforest, mountains, rivers, and offshore island, after the charred remains of an aircraft was found.
Media reports said that the plane, believed to be engaged in illegal drug trafficking, landed on a makeshift runway and was set on fire after its cargo was unloaded
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Hilberto Romero, said that last Sunday, police and members of the Belize Defence Force (BDF) conducted an operation in the Toledo District after reports were received of a low-flying aircraft.
“They made checks in the area of Dolores Village, where three miles from the village they discovered a burnt up a burnt aircraft, a jet. It was completely burnt and no cargo was found.
“Searches were conducted in the area where fuel was found along with some lights. An investigation is being carried out, searches continue and so far no one has been found and no type of cargo has been found,” Romero said.
But he told reporters that he would not disclose where the police information had come from, adding, “All we know is that it was a report of a low-flying aircraft in the area.”
