Molynes ready chopping block after 10th defeat of JPL season
Molynes United will sit bottom of the Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League table at Christmas, but Head Coach Jermaine Thomas plans for a happy new year as the club is set to make drastic changes to improve the struggling squad.
On Sunday, Molynes suffered their 10th defeat in 14 games as they went down 0-2 to Tivoli Gardens FC at Stadium East. First-half goals from Barrington Pryce and Horatio Morgan did the damage for Tivoli.
Molynes have now conceded a league-high 32 goals, with nine coming in their last three games. Thomas was once again left disappointed by his team’s defensive fragility.
“I thought giving up those goals were elementary. We should be dealing with those and be more aggressive in the final third. We controlled the first 15 minutes and we conceded against the run of play. At this level, you can’t be conceding those,” he said.
Despite being at the wrong end of the table with 10 points, Thomas says he intends to be proactive and get rid of deadweight.
“For the last couple of weeks there’s been one or two internal issues, so we’ve had to be shuffling out some players and bringing some other ones, which has created a problem,” Thomas said.
“[Now] it’s just for persons to look into themselves. We’re getting some new people with quality, so when those new players come in it should breathe a little bit of life within our team. Some persons at this level [aren’t] good enough; we have to be realistic, face it, and do what we have to do. So we’re going to fix and tweak and change.”
Things are more positive for Tivoli Gardens Head Coach Jerome Waite as they registered their third win in four games.
“It was a good performance, offensively and defensively. Today we kept a clean sheet, and it wasn’t easy because they created chances and [the] defensive unit blocked shots on numerous occasions. We should have scored more, but it came down to decision-making, and these youngsters still have to learn the game,” he said.
Starting the match week in eighth, they jump to seventh on 16 points. Waite says he intends to keep up the momentum, even if he has to be a grinch ahead of the holidays.
“If it’s up to me alone, Christmas doesn’t exist; it’s just one day. And I look at Christmas just like any other day, so we still have to continue doing the work. It’s not like we’re going to break for Christmas, so we’ll be training,” he said.
