KC alumnus Mattis inducted into Penns Wall of Fame
Former Kingston College (KC) jumper Carlos Mattis has been inducted into the Penn Relays Wall of Fame after winning the triple jump for four consecutive years from 2002-2005.
“I’m actually elated to be inducted into the Penns Wall of Fame. Even more so being Jamaican and knowing it’s only a handful of us that’s been selected thus far,” Mattis told the Jamaica Observer.
Mattis now joins fellow KC stalwarts Lennox Miller, who was inducted in 1997, and 2014 inductees Jimmy Grant, Rupert Hoilette, and Tony Keyes.
Mattis, who won five Boys’ Champs titles with KC between 2001-2005, said his achievements never dawned on him until his fourth year at Penns.
“In the beginning, I just wanted to make trips with my fellow Fortis teammates and have a good time,” he said. “It wasn’t until my final year my coach told me what I could accomplish being the first male athlete to win it four years.”
Mattis, who has a personal best of 15.73m in the triple jump, also ran on KC’s 4x100m relay teams.
He graduated from Arkansas State University with a Bachelor’s in Advertising, and a minor in political science. He has operated his own transportation business for the last 10 years.
KC has been churning out quality jumpers in recent times with the likes of Wayne Pinnock, Carey McLeod, Shawon Coke, and Jaydon Hibbert.
“I’m hopeful for this new generation of jumpers, especially Hibbert,” Mattis said. “That kid really has no ceiling and I think in time he’ll absolutely be the face of the event.”
