Powell let down by Windies batting
KINGSTOWN, St Vincent (CMC) — West Indies T20 captain Rov
man Powell has conceded that the regional team’s performance in the ongoing T20I series against Bangladesh is “not good enough”.
The home side lost Sunday’s opening T20I by seven runs and went down again to Bangladesh by 27 runs in Tuesday’s second match to give the visitors an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
In both matches, the Windies’ batsmen failed to fire. They were dismissed for 140 in the first match and then skittled out for 102 on Tuesday night.
It was Bangladesh’s first T20 series win over the West Indies in six years.
It was the West Indies’ second-successive T20 series defeat at home following a 3-1 loss to England in their five-match series last month.
Speaking to members of the media following the loss on Tuesday, Powell said the failures of the top order continued to be a problem.
“It has become something of major concern now, where we keep on during the duration of the game make the same mistakes.
“It is something that needs rectifying at the moment,” Powell said bluntly.
“I think it [the pitch] had a little more in it for the bowlers, but having said that, not being able to chase 129 is not good and it’s not good enough at this level.”
When questioned as to why no changes were made to the side after the opening match defeat, Powell said “chopping and changing” was not the solution.
“I think you have to show faith and courage in guys, keep chopping and changing won’t be the answer.
“It’s guys playing and making mistakes and learning from those mistakes. It’s just a case of us trying and hoping that guys won’t make the same mistakes over and over,” Powell said.
