Beyoncé’s new certifications mine gold, platinum for J’cans
American singer Beyonce earned 62 new RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) certifications on December 17.
Three Jamaicans, Sean Paul, Grace Jones, and BEAM are among those who are featured on songs that earned certifications.
Jones is featured on MOVE (which also features Tems), which was certified gold; Sean Paul collaborated with Beyoncé on Baby Boy (now certified double platinum); while BEAM, rapper, singer and producer and son of deejay Papa San, is featured on the gold-certified Energy.
MOVE and Energy are both featured on Beyonce’s 2022 album Renaissance, which topped the Billboard 200 albums chart. MOVE’s gold certification marks the first RIAA certification for a song featuring Jones, whose career spans close to 50 years.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, the Spanish Town-born Jones said she was surprised when she was contacted to be a part of the Beyonce collaboration.
“I was surprised because we don’t make the same kind of music. But when she told me the theme of her album I understood why. I listen to mainly Jamaican music; I don’t really listen to her music. But I respect what she does, that’s why I accepted,” Jones told the Observer.
Jones has had an enduring career in music, fashion, and film. With 10 studio albums released to date, she has made Hollywood stand up and pay attention whenever she graces the big screen.
Her film credits include Boomerang, A View to a Kill, Straight to Hell, Conan the Destroyer, and the made-for-television film Wolf Girl.
Jones received a Grammy nomination in 1984 in the category Best Video Album for
A One Woman Show.
Her hit songs include My Jamaican Guy, Pull Up to the Bumper, Slave to the Rhythm, I Need a Man, Nipple to the Bottle, Love is the Drug, and Sex Drive (her last number one on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart in 1993).
She has scored nine albums on the Billboard 200 albums chart with 1981’s
Nightclubbing charting the highest at 32.
On the Billboard Hot 100, she has, to date, registered eight entries, with MOVE being her highest peak at #55 in 2022, while on the UK official charts Jones has 13 entries with Slave to the Rhythm, and Pull Up to the Bumper both peaking at 12.
MOVE also made the charts in Denmark, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, Australia, Belgium, and Canada.
Energy was previously certified gold in Canada and 3x platinum in Brazil. The song peaked at #27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #12 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Meanwhile, Baby Boy, which was first featured on a reissue of Sean Paul’s 2002 album
Dutty Rock, was later featured on Beyoncé’s debut solo album Dangerously in Love.
The song made the top 10 in 18 countries, including topping the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Its prior certifications include gold in Brazil, Denmark, and Germany, 3x platinum in Australia, and 2x platinum in Canada and the UK.
