Glenmuir High and Manning’s School win ISSA rural junior titles in dramatic finishes
Manning’s School rallied with two goals in the final five minutes of regulation time to beat Clarendon College 3-2 in the final played at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex on Tuesday, retaining their ISSA/Mighty Malt Rural Area Under-16 title in dramatic fashion.
Clarendon College led 2-0 midway the second half before Manning’s School started their comeback with Captain Denton Williams scoring the equaliser and the winner.
There was late drama in both games played as in the Burger King Under-14 decider, Glenmuir High scored a stoppage time goal to beat Manchester High 1-0.
The winners will now turn their attention to the All-Island play-offs next month, where Glenmuir High will play Corporate Area champions Kingston College in the Under-14 final and Manning’s School will face St Andrew Technical in the Under-16 decider.
In the Under-16 final, Justin Hayles, who had scored in the Ben Francis Cup final earlier and got a double in the Under-16 semi-finals against Munro College, gave Clarendon College the lead in the 12th minute, two minutes after he got a chance to open the scoring but missed from close range.
Lashaun Harris then headed home from close range in the 51st minute to double Clarendon College’s lead.
Rajon McKenzie halved the deficit for Manning’s School when he scored in the 59th minute.
The goal seemed to have given the Manning’s team a big lift as they forced Clarendon College back into their own defensive area and eventually drew level when Williams fired home from just outside the 18-yard box in the 76th minute to tie up the scores.
Two minutes before the end of regulation in the 80 minutes game, Williams scored the winner against a deflated Clarendon College team.
In the first game, the teams, who were meeting for the third time this season, were locked at 0-0 and seemed headed for penalties when Tristan Francis redirected a corner kick past the Manchester High goalkeeper two minutes into time added.
Manchester High had won their first meeting 3-2 with the second meeting.
