She’s That Girl overcomes adversity to win War Zone Sprint Trophy
Trainer Steven Todd was beaming with pride after his talented filly, She’s That Girl, produced a gritty performance to win the War Zone Sprint Trophy at Caymanas Park on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
Despite a less-than-ideal start, She’s That Girl, ridden by Dane Dawkins, showed strong grit to overcome early hurdles and emerge victorious over five and a half furlongs (1,100m). She’s That Girl won in a time of 1:06.1 (22.4 x 47.2 x 59.3).
“She wasn’t so lucky at the break, she got hindered a bit and she showed a lot of resolution today to still come out on top after getting into problems,” Todd said, praising his filly’s determination.
The trainer revealed that She’s That Girl had been refreshed for this race, and the strategy paid off.
“We had refreshed her for this race and it seems as if it paid off today. It was a very good performance. It was the fastest she had ever run at this distance,” Todd told the
Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
Todd was particularly impressed with She’s That Girl’s ability to adapt to a new racing style.
“This race she never had it as comfortable as she normally would have, but I am very pleased with the performance. The special part about this win was the fact she had to sit off the pace today, got into some problems, and still overcame it. All of her other races, she was basically in front,” Todd noted.
With this win, She’s That Girl will now move up to Overnight Allowance company, a challenging but exciting prospect for Todd.
“She now races in Overnight Allowance company, it is a tough class, but we will take it day by day,” he said.
In the race, She’s That Girl came from behind to win easily by two lengths, with
Teflon Don (Tevin Foster) finishing second and Trust Fund Baby (Dick Cardenas) getting third place.
The race was a Restricted Stakes contest for imported three-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) and native-bred three-year-olds and four-year-olds (non-winners of four).
