Matthew Hyde gets almost 14 years in prison for torturing girlfriend
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Twenty-two-year-old Matthew Hyde, the former University of the West Indies (UWI) student who held his girlfriend captive in a dorm room and tortured her in 2023, has been sentenced to 13 years and nine months imprisonment.
The sentence was handed down Tuesday afternoon by Supreme Court Justice Carolyn Tie Powell who repeatedly described the young man’s crimes, especially the burning of the complainant with a clothing iron, as brutal and heinous.
Upon receiving the sentence, Hyde had no visible reaction.
The judge says she took into consideration the amount of times Hyde burned the complainant, the length of time over which he committed the crime and other aggravating factors.
More details to come.
