ISSA Rural Area junior football champions to be decided today
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Manning’s School will be looking to win back-to-back ISSA Rural Area Under-16 titles today when they take on Clarendon College in the final set to start at 4:00 pm at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex in Santa Cruz.
The Under-16 game will follow the Under-14 final between Glenmuir High and Manchester, who will be meeting for the third time this season, and will start at 2:00 pm.
Today’s games will be the last ISSA football games in this calendar year as the finals have been set for January 15th next year when the school term resumes.
Today’s winners will face Corporate Area champions Kingston College, the Under-14 winners and St Andrew Technical, the Under-16 champions in the all-island play-off.
Manning’s School, who are also the national defending champions, and Clarendon College qualified for today’s play-offs after wins over St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) and Munro College, respectively, last Thursday.
Manning’s School scored a last-minute come-from-behind win over STETHS as they won 2-1 in their game played at Manchester High, while Clarendon College dominated Munro College 4-1 in their game played at STETHS Sports Complex.
Eckoney Robinson gave STETHS the lead in the 11th minute but Manning’s responded almost immediately through Jarvis Meylor to level the scores at 1-1 in the 12th minute.
With the game seemingly heading for penalties, Keandre Ellis found the winner in the 78th minute, two minutes before full time.
At STETHS, Justin Hayles scored two, in the first and 13th minutes, while Lashaun Harris and Andre Brooks got one goal each for Clarendon College in their win over Munro College for who Ajani Josephs scored.
In two previous high-scoring meetings earlier in the season, Manchester High beat Glenmuir High 3-2 in the second round, while their next meeting, in the quarter-final, ended in a 3-3 draw.
In the semi-finals played between Thursday and Friday, Manchester High edged Irwin High 1-0 at STETHS on Friday a day after Glenmuir High blanked Garvey Maceo High 3-0 at Manchester High.
Samari Cousins scored a double for Glenmuir High in their win over Garvey Maceo, netting in the 17th and 40th minutes with Tristan Francis also scoring in the 25th minute.
In Friday’s rescheduled game, Adrian Smith’s 23rd-minute penalty was the difference as Manchester High edged Irwin High to set up a crucial third clash.
