Scores of St James southern residents benefit from assistance
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Scores of residents of St James Southern have benefited from welfare support, skills training and work placement, says Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister (West) and Member of Parliament (MP), Homer Davis.
In his recent contribution to the 2024/25 Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives, Davis informed that 50 persons have received assistance including payment of funeral expenses, medical aid and care packages through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
“We continue to reach out to residents through provisions made by the CDF. This assistance includes short-term poverty alleviation and welfare assistance to the most vulnerable,” he noted.
The MP said that housing repairs and aid to farmers are also supported through the fund.
Turning to skills training, he noted the ongoing commitment to human development through partnership with HEART/NSTA Trust, aimed at nurturing the next generation of professionals.
As part of this initiative, 67 young individuals have enrolled in the Hospitality Industry Training Programme, where they have acquired practical skills in areas like housekeeping and bartending.
“Many of these youth are now gaining valuable on-the-job experience, continuing to build their skills and contribute to the growth of the hospitality sector,” the MP noted.
In addition, he said that opportunities were expanded for overseas work.
He informed that 50 constituents per year participate in the overseas work programme.
“Several participants have returned and have utilised their added knowledge and experience in bettering their own farm projects,” Davis said.
The MP underscored that these efforts are part of the broader vision for growth and empowerment, ensuring that the residents have access to resources that improve their lives and strengthen the community.
