J’can basketball teams falter at FIBA 3×3 quarter-finals
Both Jamaican teams fell at the quarter-final stages in their respective sections of the fourth FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup 2024 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Sunday.
The Jamaican women basketballers were edged 11-12 by Puerto Rico, while the men were beaten 14-21 by the United States.
The Jamaican women came back from a five-point deficit at 5-10 to tie the scores at 11 with a minute and 11 seconds left in the 10-minute game time before Puerto Rico scored a free throw with 23 seconds left to claim victory.
Crystal Desiree Primm led Jamaica with five points and four rebounds, Tiffany Reynolds scored four points and had a game high nine rebounds, and Tashawna Higgins scored two points and had one rebound.
India Lee Pagan scored five points and had four rebounds for Puerto Rico, Ashley Torres scored four points and had three rebounds, and Tayra Melendez scored two points and had five rebounds. Brianna Jones scored one point but had eight rebounds.
The men opened the scoring against the United States when Nicholai Brown scored on his first shot, but they fell behind early and were soon down 1-8. But they rallied to cut the deficit to 6-9 approaching the midway stage in the game.
The USA went on another run and led 18-7, and despite the Jamaicans rallying to get to within five at 14-19, time was running out on them.
Brown scored six points for the Jamaicans along with three rebounds, Xavier Cheatham-Sewell scored five points and had five rebounds, Jabulani Newby scored three points and had two rebounds. Lushane Wilson failed to score a point but had six rebounds, the most by any player in the game.
James Parrott and Mitch Hahm both scored six points for the USA team, while Henry Caruso scored five and Dylan Travis scored four points.
