Humbly requesting a pardon for Garvey
Dear Editor,
The following is an open letter to US President Joe Biden:
President Biden, I am writing to you as a concerned citizen of Jamaica who has been deeply moved by the legacy of our first National Hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
As you may know, Garvey was a pivotal figure in the fight for the rights and dignity of people of African descent worldwide. His contributions to the pan-African movement and his unwavering commitment to the empowerment of marginalised communities have left an indelible mark on history.
However, it is with a heavy heart that I must acknowledge the conviction of Garvey in the United States in the 1930s. This conviction has cast a long shadow over his legacy, despite his immense contributions to the cause of justice and equality. In light of the strong and enduring relationship between Jamaica and the United States, I humbly request that you grant a posthumous pardon to Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
Such an act would not only honour the memory of a great leader but also serve as a powerful symbol of reconciliation and cooperation between our two nations. Since Jamaica’s Independence in 1962, our countries have enjoyed a fruitful partnership, and I believe that this gesture would further strengthen the bonds of friendship and mutual respect that we share.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I trust that you will give this request the thoughtful attention it deserves.
