Kyle A1, from high school drop out to ‘Young Legend’
KINGSTON, Jamaica — When 15 year-old emerging dancehall artiste Kyle A1 decided to quit high school to pursue music full time, his parents were very comfortable rather than concerned with the idea of a teenage high school dropout given their son’s singular drive and ambition.
“My parents wanted me to continue but they are getting comfortable with the situation because they have seen my talent; they believe in me, they know my work ethic. Plus, I believe my style and my early entry into the industry will guarantee my success,” he said.
The young rhyme-spitter, who has a growing fanbase on social media sites like TikTok, believes that he is on his way to become a Young Legend, the title of his latest single.
“The Young Legend song is my most popular song to date. The song is inspired by my parents. My mother inspires me a lot and she has always wanted for me to reach my full potential. I want to make it so that she should enjoy the fruits of my asset, my music, before leaving the earth, so I have to become a ‘young legend,” he said.
Since its release 10 days ago, the song has racked up thousands of views on YouTube. He has fast-tracked the production of a video for the project which will be released in January 2025.
Born Andre Weise Thompson, he grew up in St Thomas in a home surrounded by music. Currently a 9th grader at Yallahs High School, Kyle A1’s passion for music began in the 5th grade, encouraged by his family, particularly his father, who also dabbles in music.
He created his first full length song when he was a fifth grader and began to experiment remixing other artiste’s songs. During his teens, he discovered his talent for creating original tracks, setting him on the path to becoming a professional artiste. He faced financial challenges growing up, an upbringing that greatly influences his music.
“I wouldn’t say I grew up poor but life was challenging at times. So I stopped school to chase my dreams,” he said.
Kyle A1 is now a signed artiste under HaaTFooT, a label and management company founded by his father.
“With my style of music, I represent my parish, St Thomas, and for all the youths trying to find a way out of the slum. Believe!” he said.
Kyle A1 is known for tracks such as Size Up, Gadda and Menace.
