Berly’s Bags packs Jam-African functionality

Designed in Jamaica and handmade in Africa, fashion-forward handbag brand Berly’s Bags was born out of a passion for fashion, entrepreneurship and a need to create something meaningful.

Founded by CEO and Creative Director Mishka Prendergast back in 2020, the company, which emerged as a spin-off from her middle name ‘Kimberley’, seeks to offer stylish, versatile, and sustainable handbags that not only meet the practical needs of customers but also make them feel confident and empowered.

“I operate Berly’s Bags as a fashion-forward handbag brand that designs chic, functional, and eco-conscious bags. I officially started the business during the pandemic by purchasing and reselling premade designs but have since grown and learnt a lot which has driven the company to realise steady growth over the last few years as our products packs higher value and greater functionality,” Prendergast said as shared details about her business with the Jamaica Observer recently.

“Our target audience is largely made up of outgoing individuals who are fashion conscious value seekers wanting to make the most out of life. They often appreciate unique accessories that align with their personal style and values,” she further stated.

Boasting a wide collection of handbags, laptop bags, mini cross bodies and spacious everyday handbags, the products designed locally, Prendergast said, are carefully crafted with the needs of the Jamaican woman in mind. As a mother, wife and career woman, the need to have that perfectly suited handbag she knows all too well.

“I carefully considered the needs and wants of females in our daily routines and blended them into designs that are handcrafted by talented artisans in the Motherland [Africa] — tying our heritage and functionality into every piece,” the budding entrepreneur said.

The “Marshell Midi” and “Sav Mini” bags, said to be two of those most sought after, are largely demanded for their stylish designs, versatility and ability to complement a variety of lifestyles. Additionally, the “Maven Laptop Handbag” sold at the highest price point; Prendergast said is also well received by the market as its design meets the needs of professionals looking for both style and practicality.

Funded from personal savings and a loan from her father, the creative director said the business, which continues to grow beyond imagination, after a few years of trial and error, is now getting ready to take the market by storm, particularly following the successful staging of a relaunch event in which customers shared rave reviews about the various pieces.

“The event was held to celebrate the introduction of Berly’s Bags Originals but it also allowed us to reconnect with our customers and supporters. Doing business as a female is not exactly the easiest thing but as CEO I am proud of the sponsorships and collaborations with other women-led businesses that the company in its short time has been able to forge. These partnerships have not only amplified the visibility of Berly’s Bags but have also created opportunities for mutual growth and support within the entrepreneurial community,” Prendergast said.

The business, heavily focused on delivering value for money while consistently maintaining the highest quality from manufacturers, the CEO said, is also on the hunt to not only grow revenues but to chunk out a significant portion of market shares.

“Currently, we operate solely online via our website
berlysbags.com. Within the next 3-5 years, my plan is to expand the product line to introduce limited-edition collections as well as to partner with more retailers locally and internationally. I’m also now exploring the use of sustainable materials such as apple and cactus leather to further enhance the brand’s commitment to eco-conscious fashion. My long-term vision is, however, to establish Berly’s Bags as a globally recognised brand known for its innovative designs and ethical values,” Prendergast said.
