Kingston College defeat Garvey Maceo on penalties to win Olivier Shield
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Kingston College got their 11th hold on the ISSA Olivier Shield — their ninth outright hold — on Saturday, beating daCosta Cup champions Garvey Maceo High 4-3 on sudden-death penalties after the two teams played out a 1-1 draw in regulation.
They were also tied 3-3 after the first five penalties before KC’s Kamaul Patterson scored his kick and Garvey Maceo’s Livingstone Donaldson dragged his shot wide.
Garvey Maceo looked set to win their first hold on the Olivier Shield when they took the lead in the 62nd minute through Omarian O’Brien but gave up an own goal in the 84th minute.
Kingston College, the Manning Cup champions, added to previous outright Olivier Shield titles in 1949, 1952, 1957, 1964, 1965, 1975, 1986 and 2021, and when they shared it with Dinthill Technical in 1981 and Rusea’s High in 1985.
It was the third straight game Garvey Maceo High were going to penalties after beating Glenmuir High in the daCosta Cup semi-finals and then McGrath High in the final last week.
Garvey Maceo scored their first goal in an Olivier Shield game when O’Brien latched on to a long ball played from Tyreek McKenley on the edge of their own 18 yards box, and raced past Kingston College’s defender Kvist Paul before playing the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Malique Williams.
An own goal however brought Kingston College back in the game as McKenley rerouted a cross from Damaine Smith past his own goal-keeper in the 84th minute.
