KC defeat St George’s for ISSA Under-14 BK crown; STATHS claim Mighty Malt Under-16 final
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Kingston College (KC) continued their 100th year celebration by lifting their second football title, this time beating St George’s College 1-0 for the ISSA Under-14 Burger King crown at the Stadium East on Friday.
In the second game, St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) ended their finals winless streak edging Excelsior High 1-0 in the Mighty Malt Under-16 final, after losing five Under-19 finals on the trot from 2017, all by penalty kicks.
KC which won the Under-19 Manning Cup crown on December 6, are now celebrating yet another title, dominating their North Street neighbours 1-0, a scoreline that flattered St George’s College as KC missed a plethora of chances.
Ras-Renaldiho Harriott scored the all-important goal in the sixth minute as KC confirmed their superiority over the Light Blues having beaten them 3-2 in the quarterfinal round.
KC’s top scorer Javaun Buckridge with 27 goals in the competition was voted most valuable player (MVP) of the game and along with the likes of captain Nathan Hudson, Antowan Mullings, Jahiel Johnson, Kevair Tennant, Nthanda Scott, Shaquon Elliott, Antoine Johnson are some very promising players.
St George’s though not creating much upfront, were a threat from set plays and gave KC some anxious moments especially in the closing moments.
Meanwhile, in the Under-16, just like KC, STATHS got their all-important goal in the sixth minute courtesy of defender Kelvin Brown who rifled home from a melee resulting from a corner kick.
It was an evenly matched encounter as Excelsior showed glimpses of quality to hurt STATHS but could not find that elusive goal as the STATHS backline marshalled by Brown and Jahleek Facey stood firm.
Normally there would be an all-island decider between the urban and rural champions of the Under-14 and Under-16 winners but that won’t be happening this season.
KC will be hunting their third title when they play Garvey Maceo in the Olivier Shield final on Saturday at STETHS. Garvey Maceo will be hunting their second title.
